The trailer of “Don’t Look Up” kept popping up on my Facebook page. It caught my curiosity because many famous actors and actresses were in the trailer. I knew that I would be being taken in the “celebrity trick” but wanted to see how the movie would work with so many celebrities in one film.
After watching it, I clearly remember telling my dad to watch it now if you are interested. Otherwise, a few years later, people probably will not talk about this film anymore.
Therefore, it surprised me that one of the hosts from my favourite movie review podcast said it could be funny a few years later but now.
Initial Thoughts
Ok, here might include a bit of a spoiler.
In this comedy, one of the main events indicates the corona pandemic, and the US presidential election is described too. So, it satirises what was going on in the US in 2021.
For me, it was interesting to see actors and actresses performances. For instance, I had never seen Meryl Streep playing such an unpopular role. There are jokes that I didn’t get, but it happens all the time to me and maybe to non-English speakers when watching English comedies, anyway. Overall, this is not “the best film” type of movie, but it is timely and makes the crazy things that happened in 2021 turn into a joke. Besides, I don’t think every film needs to be Oscar-worthy. 2021 was such a year of upheaval for anybody, and the director probably wanted people to laugh it away.
That was my general thought about the movie before listening to its podcast.
Other’s View
It appeared that not many people take it funny about the main storylines: the crisis of human extinction and the US presidential election, like people had been through in 2021.
Understandably, some people are still mentally, financially, and physically suffering from the COVID outbreak, and they feel pain or dislike this movie. I believe that the pandemic has affected all of us still now.
What I Think Now
On the other hand, for me, an outsider of the US, the news about the US presidential election seemed like a comedy at that time, already. I thought everyone else could laugh about the real and the fiction version in this film. But, of course, it was not funny at all for the citizens. I noticed that people hadn’t been healed yet from shocking events about politics as well as the covid crisis after I read some reviews of this movie.
I hope the world will be more stable soon, and people can laugh about this movie and the fact that people were actually divided into two groups someday. Maybe that is why this movie exists to remember the shameful history.
The main takeaway I got from the movie was that intelligent and honest people can not change the world, but people in power can make a certain number of people believe them regardless of whether it is good or bad, true or false. Therefore, we just try what we can do at the end of the day.
But then, now, I started feeling terrified by what I took from the movie, if it is true.
I might not be able to laugh at any jokes next time watching this movie.
