“Suru” is a highly versatile verb, and its primary meaning listed in dictionaries is “to perform an action or behaviour.”
On the other hand, “yaru” has multiple meanings, and its third definition is synonymous with “suru.” Additionally, “yaru” can also mean “to move a person or object” or “to give something to someone of lower status,” so depending on how it is used, it can come across as informal or even rough.

名詞めいしで比くらべる(Collocations with Nouns)

As noted in dictionary definitions, “する” is appropriate for business settings and formal contexts.
In contrast, “やる” has a more casual, familiar tone and is naturally used in everyday conversation and among close acquaintances.

However, “する” and “やる” are not always interchangeable. Depending on the noun, one may be more natural or the other may sound awkward. For a useful table showing which nouns pair naturally with “する” or “やる,” I highly recommend the blog post “【日本語文法】『する』と『やる』の違い’” by the Japanese language teacher Kotohajime.

When used with nouns that represent emotions, experiences, or states that cannot be directly controlled by one’s own will, it is more natural to use “suru” rather than “yaru.” Additionally, there is a tendency in the usage of “suru” and “yaru” when referring to hobbies, activities, lessons, or habits performed individually.

Some sources, such as the Japanese language blog Kotohajime, consider expressions like “piano wo suru” or “gitaa wo suru” to be acceptable when referring to musical instruments. However, personally, I feel that since instruments are “tools” rather than “actions,” using “suru” feels somewhat unnatural. Instead, if you want to express something in a more casual manner while keeping the content vague, using “yaru” is a natural choice.

“Yaru” functions to intentionally express concrete actions in a vague manner, avoiding the use of more specific, original verbs. As a result, the entire utterance tends to sound more casual and gives a lighter impression. “Suru” has a similar effect of making expressions vague by not using the original verb, but since it is less colloquial than “yaru,” it can sometimes sound somewhat unnatural or vague in certain contexts.

Among accusative-marked nouns (wo-kaku meishi), genres such as films, TV programs, habitual preferences, and lessons often sound more natural and familiar when combined with “yaru” rather than “suru.” In addition, nouns related to business or running a shop can generally be used with either “suru” or “yaru” without sounding unnatural, even when used instead of the more specific or original verbs.

補 足 情 報ほそくじょうほう(Additional Notes)

On a side note, I’d like to share a little story that might turn everything we have discussed so far on its head.

My grandmother often used the phrase “~yannasai,” a casual command form based on yaru meaning “to do.”
For example, “Hayaku, shukudai yannasai.” (Hurry up and do your homework.), “Samui kara, tebukuro yannasai yo.” (It’s cold, so put on your gloves.) “Chanto kami no ke yanna.” (Fix your hair properly.) “Hora, masuku yatte. ” (Hey, put your mask on.) In all of these examples, she used “yaru” instead of “suru” or more specific verbs such as tsukeru (to put on), musubu (to tie), or totonoeru (to tidy).
As a child, I did not think anything of it. However, looking back now, I realise it was quite a rough and vague way of speaking. In fact, she still says these things to me today.

In this blog, I explained that for nouns related to accessories or clothing (such as tying your hair, putting on gloves, or wearing a mask), it is generally more natural to use “suru” rather than “yaru”. However, my grandmother avoided specific verbs like musubu and tsukeru, and simply used “yaru” to express all of them. I feel that this style of speech reflects a real and natural way Japanese is used in daily life.

My grandmother was born and raised in Ningyōchō, Nihonbashi. She was a true-born native of Edo and had a very impatient personality, which clearly came through in her speech. Perhaps this habit of using “yaru” instead of specific verbs was influenced by regional language customs, although I cannot say for certain.
